School Games and PE

Physical Education and School Sport

At Bollington Cross CE Primary School, we are committed to providing all children with a broad, inclusive and ambitious Physical Education curriculum. Our PE curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ physical competence, knowledge, confidence and enjoyment of physical activity, while supporting teamwork, resilience, leadership, cooperation and sportsmanship.

Children receive weekly PE lessons, delivered by class teachers and supported, where appropriate, by specialist PE coaches and external sports providers. External coaches enhance our provision by bringing specialist expertise and providing opportunities for children to experience a wide range of sports and activities. All external provision supports and complements our planned PE curriculum and progression.

Across the school, children develop skills through a wide range of activities, including team sports, individual sports, athletics, gymnastics, dance, games and outdoor and adventurous activities. Pupils have opportunities to develop and apply their skills in different contexts, work collaboratively, take part in healthy competition and develop confidence and resilience.

We aim to ensure that all pupils, regardless of ability or experience, have the opportunity to participate, make progress and experience success in PE. Lessons are adapted where necessary to ensure that all children can access the curriculum and develop their physical skills.

Throughout the year, children also have opportunities to work with specialist coaches and community partners. We have strong links with the Macclesfield Sports Partnership, Bollington Leisure Centre and other local sporting organisations. These partnerships provide additional opportunities for pupils to develop their skills, experience different sports and participate in sporting events and competitions.

Swimming

Bollington Cross CE Primary School is proud to provide swimming lessons for children across all year groups throughout the school year. Swimming is delivered by qualified swimming teachers at Bollington Leisure Centre.

Our swimming programme develops water confidence, swimming ability, water safety and stamina. Children are given regular opportunities to develop their swimming skills and work towards the expectations of the National Curriculum for swimming and water safety.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

We provide a range of opportunities for children to be active beyond curriculum PE. These include a mixture of school-led clubs, specialist coaching and opportunities provided through our community partnerships.

Current and recent opportunities include:

  • Roar Potential – Tuesdays

  • ATS – Mondays and Fridays

  • Football – Key Stage 2, for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6, every Wednesday

  • Netball – Key Stage 2, for Years 5 and 6, on Thursdays; dates are provided to pupils

  • Opportunities provided through external sports organisations and community partners

  • Participation in sporting festivals, competitions and events

We aim to provide opportunities for children with a range of interests and abilities and to encourage pupils to develop an active lifestyle both within and beyond school.

PE and Sport Funding

The school’s PE and Sport funding has supported the development of PE, physical activity and school sport, including specialist coaching, staff development, equipment and opportunities for pupils to participate in a wider range of activities.

As national arrangements for PE and Sport funding change during 2026–27, the school will continue to review its provision, make sustainable use of available resources and work with local and regional sporting partnerships to maintain high-quality opportunities for pupils.

Our PE and Sport funding expenditure and impact can be found in the school’s Pupil Premium and Sports Premium Report.
