Reading Curriculum
Reading at Bollington Cross C.E. Primary School
Our Intent
At Bollington Cross, we believe that learning to read is the key to unlocking the whole curriculum and fostering a lifelong love of learning. We aim for every child to become a fluent, confident and enthusiastic reader, rooted in our core values of Love, Hope, Peace and Faithfulness.
Early Reading and Phonics (RWI)
At Bollington Cross C.E. Primary School, we teach early reading through the Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme, developed by Ruth Miskin.
This systematic, synthetic phonics approach enables children to:
-
learn to read accurately and fluently
-
develop confidence and independence
-
build strong foundations for spelling and writing
Children are taught in small, targeted groups and are regularly assessed to ensure they are making rapid progress. The programme is carefully structured so that teaching matches each child’s phonic knowledge and reading ability.
As children progress, they move from learning sounds to reading books that are closely matched to their phonics knowledge, ensuring success and enjoyment at every stage.
Reading Beyond Phonics
As children become more confident readers, we support them to:
-
develop fluency and expression
-
improve comprehension skills
-
explore a wide range of high-quality texts
We provide opportunities for:
-
whole-class reading
-
guided reading sessions
-
independent reading
-
shared reading experiences
Reading for Pleasure
We want every child to love reading. Across school, we promote reading through:
-
well-stocked and engaging class libraries
